Why don't we get the ball rolling with a little introduction from you all?
Just read Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco... do you know if the film story is the same as the book?
ReplyDeleteWhen I was younger (much younger to be fair ;-) ), I had my school's vacation in Germany, hosted by a family that we knew. The goal was to learn the German language "on site". So, for three or four weeks (I don't remember exactly), I had a full immersion in the real world of german speaking people. At the beginning it was shocking, and really hard to understand real german people that speak real German.
ReplyDeleteI had the common issue of a student with the theory in mind, but without the practice. So, the most part of the first days my thoughts were: what the hell are they talking about?
Long story short, eventually the miracle happens. I began to better understand the people that are talking with me, and I began to speak myself with more confidence. Moreover, at some point I find myself thinking in German (not all the time of course, but every now and then). I mean that the full immersion in a german environnement forced in me that "mental click".
This experience teached to me that it's important to interact with people that speak another language, if you want to make really progress in this language.
Hi Nicola! I agree with you. Learning a language in the country in which it is spoken is certainly the best method. Your experience certainly reflects the kinds of experiences and many stories I have heard from young people about their foreign language sojourns.
ReplyDeletep.s. "taught" not "teached" ;-)
